Getting married in a place with such historical and cultural diversity as Charleston is what makes a Charleston wedding reception so interesting.  Thanks in great part to the work of the Charleston Preservation Society, the city is filled with a number of historical homes that serve as beautiful venues for a romantic wedding reception.  But memorable wedding receptions involve more than just historical venues.  Being able to impress your guests, many of whom travel long distances to experience your Charleston wedding reception, need to leave the event feeling as if they experience a part of the culture as well.

A key ingredient to sharing the Charleston experience is the food.  Charleston boasts one of the most developed cuisines in the country, and has a number of chefs who have gained notoriety on the national and international arenas.  Many of these chefs have signature dishes that draw from the local culture, and have helped advance the reputation of Charleston Cuisine.  Having one of the famous local chefs prepare the food for your reception truly makes it a Charleston wedding reception.

Part and parcel to the local chefs is the local cuisine itself, with many of the local dishes drawing from the history of the area.  We have Gullah dishes which have been handed down from generation to generation of former slaves who helped make Charleston one of the most successful exporting areas during Antebellum times.  Gullah, which means “mixture,” draws its influences from the African and West Indian customs and foods.  Including some of the local dishes in your menu allows your guests to say they have experienced a Charleston wedding reception.

One final ingredient of a Charleston wedding reception could be some of the local customs.  You can draw upon some of the practices at the plantations that dotted the area, and even include some of the traditional décor in your design plan.  Wrought iron, in particular, is a long-standing tradition of the historic areas and can serve as a nice theme for your event design.  Throw in some Magnolia leaves, popcorn blossom wreaths and Sweetgrass Baskets and you have achieved a Lowcountry look.

There are a number of elements you can incorporate into your Charleston wedding reception.  These are just a few.  The great news is that whatever you choose to do, your guests will experience something that will make the celebration memorable and interesting.
