It’s no surprise that Charleston, SC, has become a popular destination for bridal couples to experience their magical day.  Beach weddings are part of the reason given their rise in popularity, and there are a number of Charleston beach wedding destinations from which to choose.   What makes a Charleston beach wedding so special is the combination of natural settings so close to interesting venues for wedding receptions.

Here are some of my favorite choices for a magical Charleston beach wedding:

  • Folly Beach.  One of the oldest public beaches in the area, a couple of new bridges  and access roads also make it the closest beach to historic downtown Charleston and a great place for a Charleston beach wedding.  This allows the bridal couple to choose a spot on the beach for the wedding, and then be at their wedding reception in one of downtown’s famous restaurants about a half an hour after the ceremony.   Folly Beach also has a number of affordable beach houses that can serve as locations for the bridal party as well as various bridal celebrations to boot.  Nicknamed “the Edge of America,” Folly Beach has become known for its down-to-earth, hip atmosphere with a more eclectic mixture of visitors.
  • Sullivan’s island.   This island community on the north side of Charleston Harbor offers a totally different experience than Folly Beach, but still the same beautiful sandy beaches and gorgeous beach vistas.  As a Charleston beach wedding destination, Sullivan’s Island has a little more of a residential atmosphere than Folly Beach and has fewer possible distractions by tourists and local beach lovers.  The good news is that Sullivan’s Island also offers a number of beach houses that would be great for bridal parties and other special celebrations.
  • Isle of Palms.  Adjacent to Sullivan’s Island is Isle of Palms, another great choice for a Charleston beach wedding.  IOP – as the locals call it – is somewhere in between the atmosphere of Folly Beach and Sullivan’s Island.  It’s a little quieter than Folly but not as calm as Sullivan’s Island.  Although the farthest away from downtown Charleston of the three, it still has great access to all sorts of wedding reception facilities in nearby Mt. Pleasant.  As a Charleston beach wedding destination, it also offers beach houses that could be rented for various bridal functions as well as accommodations for guests.
Of course, the one thing all three have in common . . . being close to one of the most beautiful cities in the country and all the romantic scenery it offers.  For a Charleston beach wedding, you can’t go wrong choosing one of these fabulous and great beaches.
